LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Papu Gomez, a World Cup-winning Argentine, has finally addressed the doping controversy that led to a two-year ban from football.

The substance in question, Terbutaline, typically used to treat respiratory issues, was discovered in a sample taken from Gomez during his time with Sevilla in October 2022.

Gomez and his club at the time, Sevilla, were notified of the failed test several months ago, but the player received his official suspension just last week.

Following his ban, he has since signed with Monza back in Italy, returning after a seven-year stint with Atalanta from 2014 to 2021.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, Gomez shared his perspective on the situation and asserted his innocence in the matter involving Terbutaline by outlining six key points:

“First and foremost, I confirm that I was informed yesterday of the decision by the Anti-Doping Sanctioning Committee of the Spanish Commission for the Fight Against Doping in Sports, which includes the suspension of my federation license for a period of two years.

“I want to emphasize that I have always not only strictly adhered to all regulations but have also consistently advocated for clean sports and fair play, firmly condemning and rejecting any form of doping.

“I have never engaged in, nor do I intend to engage in, prohibited practices.”

The 35-year-old seemed to admit to having taken the drug inadvertently, but he didn’t explicitly confirm whether he plans to appeal his ban.

“The alleged violation is the result of Terbutaline being present in my system due to mistakenly, accidentally, involuntarily, and unintentionally ingesting a spoonful of my young son’s cough syrup,” Gomez explained.

He went on to clarify that the therapeutic use of Terbutaline is permitted for professional athletes and does not enhance football performance in any way.

Without delving into the details, Gomez stated that he has entrusted the matter to his legal team, as he believes that the disciplinary proceedings may not have followed the regulations.

In conclusion, he expressed gratitude for the support and encouragement he has received during these challenging times in his professional career.
