“It is a sad day, not only for the entire txuri urdin family, but for the entire world of football,” Real Sociedad wrote as part of a lengthy message on their website. “A great player with capital letters is leaving, a legend who has amazed his game wherever he has gone.
“We are touched, but we must say and we say, with immense pride, that we have enjoyed during the last three years one of the greatest talents that the history of this sport has produced. And with that we stay, with all the football he has given us, which has been a lot.
“His filtered passes, his controls, his dribbling on a tile, his unique touch and that ambition that he has shown in every play of his career has been a delight for our senses and an example for all the youngsters with whom he has shared a dressing room. Surely in Manchester, Valencia, Vigo and Eibar they think the same.”
