LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The American played largely as a substitute but produced some of the finest minutes-per-goal ratios in European soccer.
Gio Reyna hasn’t had the best of times over the past year and a half, to put it mildly. His progress was hampered by a series of injury problems in the beginning.
The World Cup followed, which was overshadowed by an unbelievable scandal involving treachery and blackmail.
Finally, on Saturday, when Borussia Dortmund had a chance to finish the season on a good note, they completely blew the chance. Reyna was helpless to stop his team from handing Bayern Munich another championship.
Reyna was visibly disturbed after the final whistle in one of the enduring pictures from the draw with Mainz.
Even though it’s unpleasant, a teary Reyna has kind of become a frequent sight. For a player with such inherent talent, nothing has gone well in a while.

This brings up both the short-term and long-term future. Reyna will most likely soon join the American men’s national team, allowing him an opportunity to move forward from the heartbreak in Dortmund.
The German powerhouses will next travel to the United States this summer, where Reyna is expected to be the center of attention during the team’s friendly.
The Bundesliga season will then start, Dortmund and Reyna will have to try their luck once more in an effort to defeat Bayern.
Reyna should finally break through next season when he starts his age-21 season, after a number of years of failures, blunders, and disappointments.
And after suppressing Reyna for so long, Dortmund should finally let him loose and let him blossom next season.
