Borussia Dortmund striker Sebastien Haller, will undergo surgery to remove testicular tumour after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July, 2022.
France-born Haller joined Borussia Dortmund from Ajax in July to help fill the hole left by the departure of Erling Haaland to Manchester City.
A few days after signing Haller felt pain and club doctors made the diagnosis.
“As expected from the beginning, different options were considered following the chemo. I announce that the fight is not over for me,” the 28-year-old Ivory Coast striker tweeted in French.
“I will have to undergo an operation to finish definitively with this tumour that keeps me away from the pitch.”
“We wish you lots of strength, Seb! Stay strong!”, Borussia Dortmund reacted to Haller’s tweet. Ajax and another former club West Ham also tweeted their support.
In October, 2022, the 28-year-old returned to the pitch three months after he underwent surgery for a testicular tumour.
Haller was ruled out for several months in July after Dortmund said he would have to undergo chemotherapy following his €31 million move from Ajax.
Shortly after, Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder revealed Haller had asked to train with his former club and is continuing his rehabilitation with the Eredivisie side.
“He asked us if he could come and train because he was rehabilitating here,” Schreuder said.
“Then it’s of course wonderful that he can be there for a while. He was able to train on a different pitch to help with his recovery.”
Haller scored 47 goals in 66 games for Ajax after joining from West Ham United last year and enjoyed a fine 2021-22 campaign in the Champions League with 11 goals in eight games.
He has also made 15 appearances for Ivory Coast, having previously represented France at youth level.
