Ghana’s former President John Mahama has emerged as the candidate of the leading opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the country’s 2024 presidential election.
Mr. Mahama, who is seeking the country’s top job for the third time, scored a popular 297,603 votes to clinch the party’s ticket, according to results announced by the electoral commission.

“I am humbled by the overwhelming vote of confidence reposed in me by the party,” Mr. Mahama said after the declaration.
“Let’s keep our collective sights firmly on the supreme objective of the NDC: leading Ghana out of the current abyss in which we find our country,” he added.
Mr Mahama was vice-president to the late President John Atta Mills and took over office as well as won the election that followed Mr Mills’ unexpected death.
