LAGOS,Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) –During its 159th Legislative sitting, the Rivers State House of Assembly passed the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill into law, overriding the veto of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The House took action by enacting a significant amendment to the Rivers State Local Government Law, granting them the authority to extend the tenures of Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen during plenary session on Monday.

Recall that the House had on March 13, 2024, passed the Local Government (Amendment) Bill and forwarded same to Fubara for assent, which the governor declined.
Under Section 100(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, the House possesses the constitutional power to override the governor’s veto if he withholds his assent.
The Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented the bill, which sparked engaging debates among the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Following the discussions, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, posed the question, and with a two-thirds majority vote, the House agreed to override the governor’s veto and ultimately passed the Bill into Law.
