LAGOS, Nigeria 9VOICE OF NAIJA) – Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps, a prominent figure among the Lionesses, has shared her team-mates’ chosen moniker for her while expressing their dislike for another label she has acquired.
Under the stewardship of manager Sarina Wiegman since 2021, Earps swiftly secured the role of England’s primary goalkeeper, earning accolades for her on-field prowess and distinctive personality.
Her remarkable performances have led to various nicknames, such as ‘Mearps’, ‘Burps’, and ‘Mary Queen of Stops’.
Despite an impressive World Cup campaign, including a crucial penalty save in the final against Spain, Earps, 30, was unable to prevent England from a 1-0 loss.

Nonetheless, her standout displays led to being recognized as the tournament’s best goalkeeper and subsequently awarded the prestigious title of the best female keeper at the recent Ballon d’Or awards, securing a record fifth-place finish for a goalkeeper in the overall women’s category.
Speaking with GQ, Earps revealed her teammates’ aversion to the ‘Mary Queen of Stops‘ nickname, stating, “They would rather not use that term. It’s either Burps or Mearps.”
Her focus now shifts to Manchester United’s upcoming clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford, the inaugural WSL Manchester derby of the season.
Following this, Earps aims to aid England in triumphing over the Netherlands and Scotland during the Lionesses’ final two UEFA Nations League group matches in the following weeks.
