LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) Sarina Wiegman’s team shattered the hearts of the Matildas to make it to the tournament’s final for the first time, and the forward was electrifying.
Wednesday’s victory against co-host Australia by England, who advanced to their first-ever Women’s World Cup final, dashed the aspirations of a whole country.
In spite of Sam Kerr’s incredible goal, they prevailed with to goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and Alessia Russo at a crowded and enthusiastic Stadium Australia.
Both sides are vying to win their first global championship when the Lionesses take on Spain on Sunday.
Following a competitive and equal first half, Toone’s powerful shot beyond Mackenzie Arnold and into the top corner gave England the lead.
Even though Hemp took advantage of some shoddy defending to give the Lionesses the lead again only eight minutes later, Kerr’s goal just beyond the hour mark was even more stunning as she beat Mary Earps from 25 yards out to tie the game.
Later on, after Kerr had missed two significant opportunities, Russo put the game beyond question.
A second first-time finalist, Spain, will now play England for the right to win the World Cup on Sunday at the same location.
Australia will need to pick themselves up as they get ready to play Sweden in the third-place playoff, in the meantime.
