Seven-time Ballon d’Or recipient Lionel Messi shared his perspective on Karim Benzema’s 2022 Ballon d’Or victory.
Karim Benzema, the former Real Madrid forward, secured the Ballon d’Or in 2022, surpassing former Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and other contenders.
His recognition was based on his outstanding performance in the season leading up to it, a key contributor to Real Madrid’s 14th Champions League triumph.
Messi stated, “I believe Benzema was a deserving winner. He earned it for his exceptional year and his consistent contributions throughout his career.
“He’s a remarkable player, and I think it’s important for both him and the sport to receive this acknowledgment.”
Both Benzema and Messi ventured out of Europe in the summer, with the former joining Saudi club Al-Ittihad and the latter signing with MLS side Inter Miami.
As the Argentine World Cup-winning captain, Messi played a pivotal role in helping Inter Miami secure the League’s Cup title this season.
On the other hand, the former Lyon star has netted seven goals in 12 matches for his new club and currently serves as the team’s captain.
Benzema is set to face Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in the AFC Champions League on 23 October.
