LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Carlo Ancelotti reportedly scolded Eder Militao and told to “wake up” after a basic mistake he made against Real Madrid resulted in a 2-0 loss following Real Sociedad’s opening goal.
Following their 2-0 loss to Real Sociedad on Tuesday night, Los Blancos’ title hopes came to a whimpering end at the Anoeta.
The opening goal was scored shortly after halftime thanks to Takefusa Kubo’s interception of Militao’s errant back throw towards Thibaut Courtois.
Madrid’s attack lacked aggression without players like Vinicius Jr. and Karim Benzema, and things only got worse when Dani Carvajal was sent after an hour for receiving a second yellow card, before Ander Barrenetxea added a second goal with five minutes remaining in regulation.
When Ancelotti was questioned about Militao’s error, the Italian did not hold back. “I agree that he needs to get up. And needs to be done soon,” he said.
The manager of Real Madrid acknowledged that the defeat was not the best lead-up to a title-deciding game against Osasuna in the critical Copa del Rey final.
In addition, he said: “It’s not the best way to prepare for a match. A defeat always hurts, gives concern, lowers the dynamic and good feelings.
“The final and the first leg of the semifinals affect concentration, we have lost continuity and have lowered the level in recent times. Fortunately, we have two competitions and let’s see if with them we can fix the season.”
Currently, Real Madrid are 14 points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after the Catalan club outlasted Osasuna, Madrid’s domestic cup opponent, in extra time at Camp Nou.
Ancelotti’s team is entering a key stretch of the season as they prepare to face Manchester City on 9 May and 17 May in the Champions League quarterfinals following the Copa del Rey final on Sunday.
