ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Representatives are divided over the recent decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC), regarding the tenure of Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
While the NEC’s decision, extending Damagum’s tenure until August 15, 2024, is seen as a victory for Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who seeks to consolidate power within the party for the 2027 elections, a faction of lawmakers aligned with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, remains adamant in their opposition.
The represents Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, Imo State, this faction, comprising 60 PDP lawmakers, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has vocally called for Damagum’s removal, citing alleged anti-party activities and collaboration with the ruling party to undermine the PDP’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
Despite their efforts, the Ugochinyere-led group was unable to sway the NEC’s decision during a recent meeting, leading to speculation within the pro-Damagum camp that stability has returned to the PDP House caucus.

When asked about the faction’s acceptance of the NEC’s decision, the representative of Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Osun State, Oluwole Oke expressed cautious optimism, suggesting that while the faction’s actions served to reinvigorate party leadership, a more consultative approach could have been beneficial.
Oke answered in the affirmative saying, “Yes, I think so.”
However, Ugochinyere remains steadfast in his opposition, declaring the three-month extension for Damagum unacceptable.
He hinted at further advocacy or legal action to challenge the decision.
Oke said, “What the Ugochinyere group achieved is to reawaken the party and minority leadership to their responsibility. However, their approach could have been better handled if they had properly consulted.
“They would have been advised to write and put their position in black and white, request the leadership to convey a meeting and if the leadership fails, then they could go out. All the same, but all the same, we have improved and we are now a better group.”

Oke’s optimism appears misplaced as Ugochinyere told Punch that the extension granted to the PDP Acting National Chairman is unacceptable to his group.
He said, “Damagun is on a transition to handing over in August but we are not comfortable with the three-month extension. We are going to meet to explore either more advocacy or a legal route. When we meet, you will hear from us.”
Meanwhile, following the withdrawal of a lawsuit contesting his suspension as PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu has been praised for his dedication to the party.
The Ugochinyere group insists that a party stalwart from the North Central zone should succeed Ayu, with former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, and ex-Senate President, Bukola Saraki, emerging as potential contenders.
