LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Geng Quandong, a 47-year-old Chinese national, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Buhari, in Kano State.
The Kano State High Court delivered the verdict following an incident in September 2022 at Janbalu quarters.
Quandong faced charges of culpable homicide over the death of Ms. Buhari, aged 23, after fatally stabbing her during an altercation.
Despite his plea of self-defense, the court ruled against him, with Judge Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji stating that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi presented evidence indicating that Buhari was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
Throughout the trial, Quandong’s defense counsel, Muhummad Dan’azumi, pleaded for leniency under section 313 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL).
However, the court upheld the verdict, recommending mercy to the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict.
In response to the judgment, Fatima Zubairu, the mother of the victim, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision.
Her statement reflects a sense of closure for the family following the tragic loss of their daughter.
