LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) Erik ten Hag has shed light on the surprising decision by Manchester United to bring back experienced defender Jonny Evans.
The Northern Ireland international, who initially came through Manchester United’s renowned academy system and made 198 appearances for the club, departed for West Brom in 2015 after winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his tenure.
Evans’ career has come full circle, as the 35-year-old returned to Old Trafford during the summer to train with the Red Devils’ Under-23 squad after becoming a free agent following his departure from Leicester in the wake of their relegation in the 2022-23 season.

His impressive performance in training caught the eye of Ten Hag, resulting in a one-year contract with Manchester United.
Explaining his decision, Ten Hag remarked, “When he joined us in the summer, I heard about it.
“Initially, he was set to train with the U23s, but I said, ‘Bring him in with the first team; maybe he can assist us.’
“During pre-season, I noticed the schedule and the squad’s numerical issues, so we decided to sign him.
“I believe he can make a significant contribution to the squad, and you’ve already witnessed how crucial he can be.”
Since rejoining Manchester United, Evans has made two appearances and impressed with an assist during his latest outing, delivering a pinpoint pass that set up Bruno Fernandes for a match-winning volley against Burnley, securing the Red Devils’ third Premier League victory of the season.
