LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Spanish Football Federation is reportedly considering the possibility of dismissing Jorge Vilda, the coach of the women’s national team, who recently guided the team to victory in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
This decision comes in light of his initial support for Luis Rubiales, the president of the federation, who is currently facing controversy.
According to a report by BBC Sport, the Spanish federation is actively seeking ways to terminate Vilda’s contract as the manager of the women’s team due to his public backing of Rubiales.
Vilda’s coaching staff has already left their positions, and the entire squad that achieved World Cup victory has expressed their intention to abstain from representing their country as long as the president holds his position.

This stance stems from an incident where Vilda allegedly kissed Jenni Hermoso without her consent, and he has refused to step down in the aftermath.
In a photograph, Vilda was seen showing support for Rubiales during the Spanish Federation’s (RFEF) special general assembly, where Rubiales reiterated his decision not to resign.
However, Vilda has since expressed doubts about Rubiales’ handling of the situation.
Prominent figures within Spanish football, including regional leaders and representatives from the RFEF, are now of the opinion that there are valid reasons to dismiss Vilda from his position, particularly due to his prominent endorsement of Rubiales.
Rubiales had previously stood by Vilda’s side in September 2022 when 15 members of the national team claimed that Vilda’s management was negatively impacting their mental well-being.
Out of these 15 players, only three chose to rejoin the Spain squad, which went on to defeat England in the Women’s World Cup final held in Sydney this year.
