LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Sky Sports has issued an apology following comments made by commentators after Sean Dyche paid his respects to Everton supporter Michael Jones.
During his team’s 4-0 loss to Aston Villa, Everton’s manager wore a black armband in memory of Jones, a construction worker who tragically lost his life while working on the club’s new stadium project at Bramley Moore Dock.
Sky Sports commentators Bill Leslie and Andy Hinchcliffe likened Dyche’s appearance to that of a “croupier,” referencing his white shirt and black armband, which sparked outrage.
A spokesperson from Sky responded, saying, “The comments made during the Aston Villa v Everton game were insensitive and unfortunate.

“We have spoken to everyone involved in the coverage, including the commentators, reminding them of their responsibilities for sensitivity. We apologize for any distress caused by these remarks.”
Jones, aged 26, suffered a fatal accident at the construction site just the previous week. Everton reached out to his family and organized a tribute in the 26th minute of the game to honor him.
The club expressed their grief, stating, “The loss of Michael Jones, a lifelong Evertonian who followed the Blues home and away, has left us all devastated. Our thoughts are with Michaelās family, friends, and colleagues.
“We are collaborating with his family on a fitting and enduring tribute. Michael Jones, forever in our hearts.”
