LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish Football Federation, has faced backlash for kissing women’s team player, Jenni Hermoso, on the lips following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the World Cup final.
After their triumphant win against the Lionesses at Stadium Australia, the Spanish team gathered on the podium to receive their gold medals from FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
It was during this medal presentation that a video captured Luis Rubiales planting a somewhat awkward kiss on the lips of team captain Jenni Hermoso, sparking controversy.
Jenni Hermoso later shared her feelings on a live stream, expressing that she “didn’t appreciate” the gesture.
However, in subsequent comments provided to the media, she seemed to offer a different perspective, describing the kiss as a “spontaneous gesture of affection.”

Hermoso clarified, “It was a completely unplanned and mutual display of emotion due to the immense joy that comes with winning a World Cup.
The president and I have a strong rapport, and his behavior towards all of us has been exemplary. The gesture was a natural way of showing affection and gratitude.”
Rubiales reportedly defended his actions, describing them as a “small and affectionate gesture,” and dismissing claims of impropriety during an interview with Radio Marca.
On social media, Spanish TV presenter Claudya Carolina criticized Rubiales’ conduct, labeling it as “inappropriate” and “excessive.”
