LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- An officer of the Ogun state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Popoola Olasupo, has been abducted at the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Olasupo was reportedly kidnapped while heading to his duty post around 6.30 am on 16 April around the Eledumare-Fidiwo axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State.
A source (name withheld) said the gunmen, who emerged from the bush, opened fire on a commercial bus in which the official was travelling and he was the only one abducted.
It was further gathered that policemen and some volunteers are currently on the trail of the gunmen.
Efforts to get the reaction of the spokesperson for TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, were unsuccessful as he was unavailable as of the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.
“Our anti-kidnapping squad is already after them. We are combing the forest and we know that they will all be arrested.
“Ogun State is not a ground for criminals to settle. It is either they leave or we smoke them out of this state,” Oyeyemi said.
The incident comes a few weeks after Oduneye Olusegun, a journalist, was abducted at the Ijebu-Ode area of the state.
The kidnappers were said to have demanded N30 million ransom from the family of the victim.
A couple of days later, the journalist was rescued after police officers traced his car to the Idimu area of Lagos.
The rescue party were said to have engaged in a 45-minute gun battle with the abductors before Olusegun was freed and one of the suspects arrested.
