Nollywood actor and politician, Desmond Olusola Elliot, has bemoaned the level of hatred he receives from people over the comment he made back in 2020.
Recall that during the #ENDSARS protest three years ago, Elliot received a gush of backlash after a video of him referring to Nigerian youths as children (besides other comments), during a plenary session at the Lagos state House of Assembly, went viral.
The comment seemed to have enraged most Nigerian youths who have not hidden their resentment towards him since the incident.
Speaking on TVC’s Your View, ‘Let’s Talk’, the lawmaker apologized for the comment, explaining he made the comment out of emotions.
“I’m still apologising to those who must have misconstrued what I said. I said I was taken by emotions,” he said.
“But, in the end, it still didn’t take away from the facts; the hatred is too much, the polity, the hatred is too much.”
The actor-cum-politician also revealed that the hatred has extended to the streets as he gets verbal attacks whenever he steps out.
“I’m in politics now for eight years and I still stand on the fact that love conquers all. I mean I’ve gone out in the streets and people still curse me,” he said.
“But I’m not afraid, I’m not ashamed because they don’t understand the stress that you go through.”
Meanwhile, on-air personality Dotun has taken a swipe at Desmond Elliot for installing transformers in his constituency just days before the election.
On Thursday, Desmond Elliot, who is running for a third term as a lawmaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly under APC, donated transformers to his constituency.
He shared the news on social media that he had commissioned the installation of high-capacity transformers in Surulere.
“I am excited to announce that new high-capacity transformers have been installed in Surulere, bringing reliable electricity to communities that have long needed it,” he said, listing the names of areas where he had installed them.
Reacting via his Twitter page, Dotun wrote that the actor, who couldn’t buy a power bank for his constituency, was donating eight transformers all at once, adding that it is obvious Elliot doesn’t care about the people.
“Desmond that couldn’t buy a power bank for his constituency suddenly buys 8 transformers all at once few days to the election. Isn’t it obvious that these guys don’t care Desmond! Import and export,” he wrote.
Some even tagged his gesture as a beautiful farewell gift.
