IBADAN, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Nigerian musicians, Seun Kuti and Peter Okoye of the P-Square group have traded words on social media as the 2023 elections draw near.
Kuti said he believes that no politician can save Nigeria except for Nigerians themselves.
It all started when Seun Kuti called Peter Obi an opportunist in a viral interview, and many Nigerians disagreed with his stance.
Seun then called out PSquare’s Peter in another Instagram live video and shared posts on his stories where he bashed the music star, a popular Peter Obi supporter.
The legendary Fela Kuti’s son insisted that even if Sowore wins the election, he cannot make any effective change in a country with PDP and APC-controlled states.
He went on to say that Peter Obi is an opportunist who switched to the Labour Party after losing the PDP primaries.
While blasting P Square, Seun also used the opportunity to make it clear that he is not supporting any of the three popular presidential candidates.
According to Seun, anybody who votes for Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar or Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a big fool. Fela’s son added that the people are lazy and desperate and it is why politicians are able to steal their money.
The comment struck a nerve with Okoye, who has been an avid supporter of the Obi movement.
Reacting to this, Peter Okoye wrote: “Dude just erased his father’s history. You said only the people of Nigeria can save Nigeria. Is PO and the rest candidates not Nigerian people? Shame! Shame! Shame!!!”
Reacting further, Okoye took another swipe at the afrobeats singer, and said he is a failed musician who is only riding on his father’s glory.
He called Kuti a Grammy nominee who is still living in the trenches.
Recall that Kuti has been nominated for the prestigious award severally and never won.
Fans, however, deemed that Mr P had overreached when he called Fela’s Legacy, the Afrika Shrine, a local place where people got to smoke hemp.
@UsmanMustapha_M reacted to the back and forth between the singers. He said: “Local shrine you say? The street will never forget this, man.”
@dudukulture wrote: “Last time I checked you haven’t been nominated for a Grammy.”
@Shawnkellzmusic said: “Seun has Grammy nominations. Seun does concerts all over the world without posting sef. Seun is ok and not hungry. He is part of the kuti family and that will never change so that point ain’t valid. He made a good point and you went after his fathers legacy, that’s petty.”
Another netizen, @sexytemmy110 weighed in, stating: “Guy you just made @PeterObi lose a vote come on why go the extra mile to disrespect Fela’s legacy come on he is the author of the afrobeat you guys soar on to make it in life.”
