LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Labour Union consisting of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have spoken against the new proposed electricity tariff by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
NLC President Mr Joe Ajaero, and TUC counterpart, Mr Fetus Osifo, used the 2024 Workers Day to felicitate with workers in Abuja, on Wednesday.
Both unions expressed concerns on the power crisis in the country.
According to the union, managing energy resources efficiently is the bedrock for a nation to achieve economic growth.
They added, “One of the pivotal factors constraining our nation is our glaring incompetence in managing this sector for the collective welfare of our citizens.

“Power, regardless of its source, remains paramount in Kickstarting any economy, while oil and gas are indispensable for robust energy success in every country. “
They further expressed the need for the federal government tackle the challenges in the energy sector despite zero improvement after a decade of privatisation.
“The reasons are glaringly evident. As long as those who sold the companies remain the buyers, Nigerians will continue to face formidable challenges in the power sector.
The dou also referred to the issue of estimated billings for non-existence energy consumers as a shoplifting method on Nigerians.
” It is unethical to force Nigerians to pay higher tariff for non-existent electricity.
“Estimated billing is an extortion and a day light robbery against Nigerians,” the duo said.
