The presidential candidate of the All Progressive Candidate, Bola Tinubu has commended former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, for his contribution to the stability of Africa and his diplomatic mission in Ethiopia.
Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, on Wednesday, witnessed the signing of the peace deal between the Ethiopian Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, after two years of devastating conflict.
The conflict claimed thousands of lives and left millions in need of aid.
According to reports, the two parties have formally agreed to a permanent end to hostilities.
The warring parties arrived in South Africa on Monday and began the peace talks which were finalised on Wednesday evening with the observers from the United Nations (UN), the United States (US)and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Both the government and Tigray dissidents formally agreed to a permanent termination of hostilities which has lasted two years to displace millions.
“The two parties in the Ethiopian conflict have formally agreed to the cessation of hostilities as well as the systematic, orderly, smooth and coordinated disarmament,” Obasanjo said.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, after the truce was reached, said: “As we’re completing the war in the north with victory, we have to bring peace, development and ensure Ethiopia’s prosperity, so we make those forces that cause conflict among Ethiopians from afar feel shame.”
Reacting to the development on Thursday, 3 November, 2022, Tinubu extolled the former Head of State for his role in the peace talk.
He tweeted: “I commend the statesmanship of former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he continues his contribution to the stability of the African continent with a successful diplomatic mission in Ethiopia where he led the mediation of an important peace treaty.
“It is hoped that the process results, ultimately, in the permanent resolution of the conflict and a full commitment to the cause of unity, restoration, and development.”
Tinubu’s tweets sparked reactions from Nigerians on Twitter.
A tweep @amaraedec wrote: “Obasanjo is a man that you will never be. If you respect him enough, you should stop dividing Afenifere just to achieve your selfish ambition. Please step down for Peter Obi, and apologize to Osibanjo for robbing him off his well deserved candidacy.”
Another tweep, @Arcsizzle2 also attacked the former Lagos Governor: “Obasanjo will never tribalise election because of his personal ambition. Even after you left Lagos state government in 2007, the state Treasury is tied to your personal account.
“Alpha beta monthly allocation was increased from 800m to 2.5B monthly. If this funds was with Atiku, at least we would have so many pure water and beverage factories that will employ lagos youths who are now into cultism, thuggery just to survive because there are no job opportunities.
“The Lagos rail project was for 173m USD sir, how come you move it to over 1.5B usd, imagine the amount of jobs those funds could have provided for Lagos youths or the southwest.”
@ikoreal2005, in his reaction, tweeted: “Why don’t you do the same by facilitating the dismantling of the criminal agbero enterprise that destroys lives and livelihoods in Lagos?”
On his part, @kenneth11kenneth said: “I see readiness in u sir.Saw few pics nd videos 4rm ur outing wit d business elites in Nigeria days ago with ur team & I must say u’ve got d best team,I mean there’s no better team dat can assure ur LOSS than them.
