LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi made history on Monday by appointing the country’s first female prime minister, Judith Suminwa, marking a significant milestone in Congolese politics.
The appointment comes after weeks of uncertainty following Tshisekedi’s inauguration for a second term in January. The process involved navigating the complexities of forming a majority coalition in the National Assembly, a crucial step before selecting a prime minister and forming a new government.

“I am aware of the great responsibility … We will work for peace and the development of the country,” Suminwa stated during a televised address.
Suminwa’s appointment comes at a challenging time for the Democratic Republic of Congo, with ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises in eastern regions, as well as the management of the country’s significant mineral wealth.
During his first term, President Tshisekedi pledged to address corruption, revitalize the economy, address inequalities, and enhance security in the eastern regions. However, critics argue that progress in these areas has been limited.
