LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has taken a firm stance on examination malpractice by withholding the results of 65 candidates who participated in the maiden Computer Based Test (CBT) of its 2024 first series West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates.
Dr Amos Dangut, the council’s Head of National Office (HNO), disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen to announce the release of the results of this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), on Friday, in Lagos.
Dr. Dangut said although there is a significant reduction in malpractice cases compared to the previous year’s examination, examination malpractice is the reason the results were withheld.
He said: “Investigations into the reported cases are ongoing, with outcomes to be communicated directly to affected candidates.
“Those impacted can seek redress by registering complaints on the official WAEC website, https://waecinternational.org/complaints,” he said.

He noted that out of the total candidates who sat for the examination, 98.37 percent had their results fully processed and released, with only a small percentage awaiting completion due to errors.
He said the analysis of candidates’ performance revealed an improvement in the percentage of candidates obtaining credit and above in essential subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Providing further details, Dr. Dangut disclosed that out of 8,362 candidates registered for the CBT examination, 8,139 sat for it across 140 CBT centers nationwide. Special accommodations were made for 21 candidates with varying degrees of needs.
Additionally, candidates are encouraged to check their results on www.waecdirect.org and access digital copies of their certificates on the WAEC Digital Certificate platform, www.waec.org. Applications for hard copy certificates can be submitted online via the WAEC Certificate Request Portal (e-Certman) at https://certrequest.waec.ng/.
The examination, conducted between January 31 and February 17, introduced a hybrid approach combining computer-based multiple-choice questions with traditional paper-based essay and practical sections.
This innovative method aims to modernise examination administration while ensuring fairness and integrity.
