LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Mele Kyari emphasized the need for tailored strategies to address the continent’s diverse energy challenges.
Speaking at a Leadership Dialogue Session during the prestigious CERAWeek Conference in Houston, United States, Kyari highlighted the complexities facing sub-Saharan Africa ‘Energy transition is a very difficult subject for countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa,’ during his address at the CERAWeek Conference.”
He also outlined key initiatives aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources in a press release issued by NNPCL on March 19, 2024.
Kyari underscored the significance of energy security as a prerequisite for effective transition, particularly in regions where access to clean cooking fuels remains limited.

He emphasized the critical role of gas in achieving affordable and sustainable energy solutions, pointing to NNPC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen gas infrastructure and supply networks.
Central to his address was the Nigeria Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) Project, a transformative initiative poised to traverse thirteen African countries en route to Europe.
Kyari announced that the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the $25 billion project would be reached by December 2024, signaling a significant milestone in regional energy cooperation.
Against the backdrop of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry reforms, Kyari highlighted NNPC’s commitment to commercial viability and transparency, as demonstrated by its evolution into a fully commercial entity.
