LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Renowned singer, Crown Uzama aka Shallipopi, has revealed the origins of his nickname.
The “Cast” singer cited inspiration from the 1994 Chinese kung fu comedy flick, Shaolin Popey.
During a recent conversation with British media personality Madame Joyce, the artiste shared that he initially experimented with his birth name, Crown, as well as other name like Drip Face, before ultimately settling on Shallipopi.

He recounted how he stumbled upon the movie during his childhood, explaining that his mother intended to purchase a Tom And Jerry CD, but instead bought Shaolin Popey, which they inadvertently watched after inserting it into their DVD player.
“I was looking for [stage] name, so I was like let me coin something from the movie Shaolin Popey, that’s how I came up with my nickname,” he said.
Furthermore, Shallipopi clarified that his music style differs from Afrobeats, labeling it as “afro-talk.”
He emphasized that he doesn’t identify as a rapper but rather as a talker.
