LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) –The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Akufo-Addo conferred the country’s citizenship on the music legend, Stevie Wonder.
The development was made public on the official X account of the president on Tuesday, May 14.
President Akufo-Addo praised Stevie Wonder for his outstanding contributions to music and his unrelenting dedication to the African diaspora.
The president’s post read, “In conferring Ghanaian citizenship upon Stevie Wonder, we not only extend our warmest embrace to a beloved son of Africa, but also reaffirm our belief in the enduring spirit of Pan-Africanism and the global African family, and the boundless potential of our continent and all its descendants.”
A statement from the nation’s presidential website read:

It read, “The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has conferred Ghanaian citizenship upon the legendary musician, humanitarian, and global icon, Stevland Hardaway Morris, popularly known as Stevie Wonder.
“This conferment, according to President Akufo-Addo, not only recognises his immense talent and achievements but also acknowledges his deep connection to the African continent and his tireless efforts to promote unity, solidarity, and cultural exchanges among all peoples of African descent.”
Stevie Wonder, who has 25 Grammy Awards expressed deep gratitude, joy and honour bestowed upon him.
According to him, he has been drawn to Ghana’s vibrant culture and warm hospitality and he was thrilled to now call himself a Ghanaian citizen.
Joy and celebration have greeted the news of the singer’s Ghanaian citizenship, both in Ghana and abroad.
Stevie Wonder, born Stevland Hardaway Judkins, is one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century. Known for hits like ‘Superstition’, ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You,’ and ‘Isn’t She Lovely,’ Wonder has won 25 Grammy Awards and sold over 100 million records worldwide.

This move is expected to further enhance Ghana’s reputation as a hub for African diaspora and its commitment to Pan-Africanism.
As a newly minted Ghanaian citizen, he joins a growing list of African American celebrities who have been granted Ghanaian citizenship in recent years.
Some of them include Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Tina-Knowles Lawson, Rosario Dawson, and Steve Harvey.
