ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Nigeria’s Super Eagles have defeated Ivory Coast, hosts of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
The Jose Peseiro-led team secured a narrow 1-0 win courtesy of a well taken penalty kick by captain Troost Ekong in the second half of the match.
The scoreline could have been more damaging for the hosts had Nigeria’s talisman, Victor Osimhen, converted begging chances.

AC Milan forward, Samuel Chukwueze, was also selfish when all he had to do was square the ball to Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman to double Nigeria’s lead.
With this result, the Nigerian side will have to defeat Guinea Bissau, the whipping boys of the group, to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout stage of the championship.
Equatorial Guinea currently top the group after whipping Guinea-Bissau 4-2. However, they still need a win to totally guarantee them a spot in the next phase of the competition.
