ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Gabriel Attal has been appointed as France’s youngest prime minister at the age of 34, succeeding Élisabeth Borne in an official ceremony at the prime minister’s residence.
The move is part of Emmanuel Macron’s efforts to rejuvenate his presidency with a new government.
Gabriel Attal, currently the education minister, takes on the responsibility of leading the French government into crucial European Parliament elections in June.
His rapid rise in politics began a decade ago as an adviser in the health ministry, evolving from a card-carrying member of the Socialists to a key figure in Macron’s administration.

Attal, the first openly gay occupant of Hôtel Matignon, faces challenges, including a hard-right opposition surge, a National Assembly lacking a majority, and defining the goals of Macron’s second term.
Despite his popularity and respect in the National Assembly, questions linger about his political stance and whether he can provide the new sense of purpose Macron’s presidency needs.
President Macron expressed confidence in Attal’s energy and commitment to implementing the revitalization and regeneration project.
However, the appointment raises questions about whether Attal is a genuine force or merely Macron’s protege.
The challenges ahead include a potential defeat in the European elections and establishing authority over influential figures within the government.
