LAGOS, NIGERIA (VOICE OF NAIJA) – A Russian general, Major-General Yuri Afanasevskii, was seriously injured in a failed assassination attempt orchestrated by Ukraine’s Security Service. The incident occurred at his residence in the occupied Luhansk region on Sunday, according to local reports.

The explosive device, disguised as a cellphone, detonated immediately after activation, causing severe shrapnel wounds to Afanasevskii’s head, neck, and stomach. He was promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Additionally, his 21-year-old son sustained injuries and underwent the amputation of three fingers, as reported by the Russian state news agency Tass.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has confirmed the incident and stated that a woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. It is alleged that she provided Afanasevskii with the cellphone rigged with explosives. The suspect reportedly confessed to her involvement in the failed assassination plot, which is believed to have been orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence operatives.

Luhansk officials have downplayed the severity of Afanasevskii’s injuries, assuring that he is “alive and well.” The investigation into this incident is ongoing as authorities work to uncover further details surrounding the failed assassination attempt.
