LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) Mason Greenwood’s career prospects in England have been severely constrained following Manchester United’s decision to sever ties with the young forward.
The club recently revealed their choice not to reintegrate Greenwood into their ranks, a resolution that emerged after their internal investigation into the player’s conduct.
In January 2022, the striker was arrested under suspicion of domestic violence and sexual assault, resulting in his suspension by the club.
Although he faced charges in October, these were subsequently dropped in February of the current year due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.
While a report by The Athletic suggested that United initially contemplated reintegrating Greenwood, this intention was reversed in the face of a strong backlash from fans.
This backlash even led to calls for Chief Executive Richard Arnold to reconsider his position at Old Trafford, and Gary Neville criticized the club’s handling of the situation.

Sutton concurs that United’s eventual decision was the right one, but he believes that the possibility of Greenwood returning to football in England is virtually nonexistent.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Sutton, a former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea striker, stated, “Manchester United had only one viable choice, and they ultimately reached the correct decision – the sensible one.”
When asked whether Greenwood could potentially resume his career in England, Sutton responded with a definitive “No.“
He emphasized that the immense pressure on his teammates and the intense scrutiny from whichever club he might join would make such an endeavor unfeasible.
Sutton remarked, “He will need to seek opportunities abroad to rebuild his career. Despite his talent, he has veered off course, made significant errors, as he acknowledged in his statement. These are major mistakes, and his path to recovery involves taking small steps.“
Sutton continued, “He must work to reintegrate himself, but such a process cannot unfold within this country.”
