LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Mason Greenwood has issued an official statement confirming his departure from Manchester United, as mutually agreed upon by both parties.
Greenwood had been suspended since January 2022 following an arrest. In October 2022, he faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault leading to bodily harm but the charges were strongly denied by the United States.
In February, all accusations against him were dropped due to the withdrawal of crucial witnesses and new evidence coming to light, rendering a conviction unlikely, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Both Manchester United and Greenwood have released simultaneous statements confirming his exit from the club.
The striker had been training for a return to the sport and had also been linked to potential loan moves to Serie A.

Although the destination of Greenwood’s next move remains uncertain, it’s apparent that he will collaborate with the club to explore new opportunities. It’s unclear whether United will receive a transfer fee as part of this transition.
Greenwood’s statement aligns with United’s release, in which he expressed, “I understand that people may form judgments based on social media but I want to clarify that violence or abuse in any relationship is against my values.
“While I was acquitted of the charges, I acknowledge mistakes in my relationship that led to the situation being misrepresented on social media.”
He continued, “I am committed to setting a positive example both as a footballer and as a responsible father and partner.
“After a thorough process involving Manchester United, my family, and myself, it is deemed best for all parties involved that I continue my football journey away from Old Trafford, ensuring no distractions for the club.”
Greenwood expressed gratitude towards Manchester United and his loved ones for their support throughout his journey and aims to channel his talents positively on and off the field, focusing on his personal growth and responsibilities. He leaves behind a legacy of 129 appearances for United and an England cap.
