LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Professor Lai Oso of the School of Communication, Lagos State University (LASU), has said there can’t be any meaningful democracy without an independent and buoyant media.
Oso said it is the responsibility of the media report event, circulate ideas and information, especially now the 2023 general election is by the corner
The former reporter both in Radio and the News Agency of Nigeria, stated this on day one of the Amplify In-depth Media Conference and Award (AIMConference), held in Ikeja, Lagos State on Thursday.
In his keynote address on ‘How Investigative Journalism Shapes Election Outcomes and Deepens Democracy’, Prof. Oso said for Nigeria to witness a good out come in the forthcoming elections, the media must be up and doing.
“Election allows participation of Citizens. This is where media has a social responsibility.
“Without vigorous media, we can’t have the kind of election needed, he said, adding that Investigative journalism is the hard core of media, it is the journalism of outreach, the custodian of conscience.”
He urged journalists to report based on investigation, stressing that every society have values, saying that investigation is expected to bring out things to the public.
Describing the journalists as the watchdogs of the citizens, the Academician noted that the media should intervene where the moral code of an existing society has been tampered with, through investigation.
Meanwhile, the event which was supported by MacArthur Foundation, was graced by journalists from various states in the country.
