IBADAN, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Grammy-winning musician, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun aka Wizkid, has responded to clapback from Nigerian rappers who tackled him over his comment on hating rap music.
The Afrobeat star’s controversial comment where he disparaged rap music by labelling it ‘boring’ and ‘dead’, garnered reactions from music lovers and rappers in the Nigerian music industry including indigenous rapper, Oladips on Friday morning.
The street-hop singer took to his social media page to shade Wizkid with a ‘diss’ track.
He criticized his remarks and mocked him for not supporting the Nigerian rap community.
Rap legend, MI Abaga also criticized Wizkid‘s comments about rap music.
The veteran rapper went ahead to list names of rappers in the country such as Vector, A.Q, Falz, Ladipoe, Blaqbonez, Ice Prince, and Ajebo Hustlers, who have made a name for themselves while also noting that the genre is on ‘the rise.’
Blaqbonez and LadiPoe also joined voices to the mix.
The Chocolate city Rapper kickstarted the counter challenge with a tweet of his photo with the caption, “I’m not dead, I’m handsome”. LadiPoe then quoted the tweet saying “I’m not dead, I’m sexy”.
Wizkid also made many fans and critics curious after he announced via Twitter page on Friday afternoon that he has a “special announcement” on 3 December.
The ‘Essence’ crooner, in reaction to backlash trailing his comment, took to his Snapchat on Saturday, as promised, to drag the Nigerian rap industry.
He also listed his favorite rappers in Africa.
Wizkid wrote on Snapchat: “Broke boys!
“Can’t believe y’all broke boys really thought Big Wiz will talk abt y’all wow!”
To drive home his point, the father of four denounced them of the rapper title and revealed that Nasty C, Sarkodie, and Black Sherif are the only rappers in Africa.
“Y’all not even rappers! nasty C/Sarkodie/ black sherif the only rappers in Africa. Y’al dumb fucks.”
Seeing as quite a number of rappers like Oladips made diss videos to call out Wizkid, he urged them to continue, maybe he would help their lives from that angle.
“Y’all keep sending una popsy rap videos! I go dey watch maybe I fit help una mama life!”
