ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has called on Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to resign as the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), or beg for pardon.
This is said to be the first time Ortom has openly asked Ayu to resign following series of talks in that regard by other executive members of the PDP.
Ayu is from the same home state with Governor Ortom.
Ortom stated this during the Executive Council meeting in Government House Makurdi at the weekend.
The Governor, recalling that Ayu promised to resign if a Northern candidate emerges presidential candidate of the party, urged him to honour his words.
He said: “Ayu told the whole world that if a northern candidate emerges he will resign. So where is the honour now to continue in office?
“If you don’t want to resign beg for pardon. But it is not enough to say your tenure is four years and you won’t resign as you said it yourself.”
Ortom’s call comes on the heels of a call by a group of Governors led by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, on Ayu to resign for a Southerner to take over.
According to them, except Ayu resigns as the party National Chairman, they will not support the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.
