LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- In Nigeria, the act of spraying money at events is not just frowned upon but illegal, constituting a punishable offence.
This prohibition stems from the Clean Notes Policy initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2008, aimed at maintaining the quality of banknotes in circulation.
The policy, designed to enhance the durability and visual appeal of currency, prohibits various forms of currency abuse, including spraying, writing, stapling, tearing, and even dancing or stamping on banknotes.
In 2018, the CBN issued a warning to Nigerians against spraying money at parties, insisting that those who flout this warning were at risk of a six-month jail term or a fine of N50,000.
A statement by CBN’s spokesperson, Isaac Okorafor read:

“If a celebrant is dancing and you spray him/her, you may go to jail from the party venue, because the law enforcement agents will be there, waiting to arrest you.
The law enforcement agencies must catch offenders and take them to court. Our (CBN) collaboration with the police will intensify as we move to implement the mobile court for offenders.”
Despite warnings and legal consequences issued by the CBN, numerous individuals, including celebrities and politicians, have been caught violating these regulations.
Among them are notable personalities like Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, Bobrisky, Davido, Wizkid, Obi Cubana, and many others
1) Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin
Nigerian actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, found herself at the centre of a legal storm when she was convicted and sentenced to six months in prison by the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The charge? Spraying and stepping on naira notes at a social event in Lagos State.
2) Bobrisky

Similarly, the controversial figure of Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, faced a similar fate with a six-month prison sentence for his involvement in naira abuse.
However, these cases raise questions about the fate of those who engage in similar acts but escape legal repercussions, highlighting disparities in law enforcement.
3) Davido
Davido, a Nigerian singer, has been observed on numerous occasions showering money at events, as was evident when he was seen doing so at a club alongside fellow singer Shallipopi.
4) Wizkid
Similarly, Wizkid has also been spotted spreading money around at various events, including on the streets of Surulere.
5) Obi Cubana
Obi Cubana, a prominent Nigerian businessman and socialite, is no exception to this practice, as evidenced by his lavish display of cash during his mother’s burial in 2021, where notable artiste like D’banj and Davido performed.
6) Cubana Chief Priest
Cubana Chief Priest, a celebrity barman is another figure known for his extravagant gestures. He has been seen partaking in money spraying activities across clubs, parties, and even in church.
7) Nkechi Blessing
Actress Nkechi Blessing was also witnessed showering money at a hype man during a party in Lagos.

Additionally, figures like E money, Kcee, Zubby Michael, Pelumi Nubi, and even politicians like Ibrahim Abunna have been caught in similar acts of money spraying.
Despite these occurrences, only two celebrities from the list above have been prosecuted.
The question remains: why have others not faced prosecution by security agencies yet?
EFCC Clampdown
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it is investigating these celebrities suspected of involvement in Naira abuse.
Oyewale disclosed that the commission has summoned several celebrities for questioning, and they have provided valuable information during the interrogation process.
The EFCC emphasized its awareness of viral videos circulating online, depicting individuals engaging in acts of naira abuse.
The anti-graft agency commended the public for their vigilance in protecting the sanctity of the national currency, signaling a collective effort in combating financial misconduct.
“On the issue of the works of the commission against Naira abuse, dollarization of the economy, and the enforcement of all extant laws relating to them, the EFCC appreciates the avalanche of public awakening, support, and involvement demonstrated so far,” the statement reads in part.

“Increasingly, members of the public are drawing the attention of the Commission to video recording of abuse of the Naira by Nigerians from all walks of life. These gestures amply demonstrate rising consciousness of the public to the sanctity of our national currency and the need for collaborative engagement to sustain the tempo.
“To this end, the Commission will always investigate and prosecute anyone involved in the abuse of the Naira. Old videos being exhumed and flying around for the attention of the Commission are noted as the Commission is sensitive to the fact that its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarization of the economy commenced operations on February 7, 2024. However, going forward, new videos of such infractions will be investigated and prosecuted.
“At the moment, the Commission is investigating several celebrities involved in Naira abuse. Many of them have made useful statements to the Commission and many more have been invited by investigators working on the matter.
“The EFCC will not relent in its no-sacred-cow mode of operations and the public should be wary of running afoul of laws against the crime.”
