LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)–The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially announced the restoration of the national grid following the sixth collapse recorded in 2024.
TCN stated that the collapse was triggered by a fire at the Afam Power Generating Station, leading to partial disruption of the national grid.
“At 02:41 hrs today, 15th April 2024, a fire erupted at the Afam V 330kV bus bar coupler, leading to the tripping of units at Afam III and Afam VI.
“This resulted in a sudden generation loss of 25MW and 305MW, respectively, destabilizing the grid and causing a partial collapse,” said the company’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.

Mba clarified that the Ibom Power Plant had been disconnected from the grid and was providing electricity to specific areas within the Port Harcourt region.
She emphasized that isolating the Ibom Power Plant helped mitigate the iumpact of the system disturbance.
The TCN also verified that the impacted section of the grid has been completely restored and stabilized.
Amidst ongoing challenges, Nigeria faces yet another grid collapse with the latest occurrence striking on Monday, April 15th, around 3 a.m.
This marks the sixth collapse experienced by the national grid in 2024, leaving countless homes and offices without power.
