LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has lauded Lagos State residents for their orderly behavior at the Ounjè Eko Sunday markets, marking the second successful week of operation.
On Sunday, crowds flocked to the markets to purchase various items at discounted prices, with many expressing satisfaction with the initiative and urging its continuation. A statement by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, highlighted Governor Sanwo-Olu’s appreciation for the calmness and organisation observed at the markets despite the large turnout of residents.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting Lagosians, stating, “It is all about assuring Lagosians that our administration will continue to stand by them. We will continue to find and deploy creative ways of easing their burden.”
The governor commended the Special Dispensation Advisory Committee on Social Interventions for its support in implementing various initiatives aimed at alleviating economic hardship. The “Ounje Eko” Market pilot scheme, launched on March 17, 2024, across 57 centers in the state, is part of a multi-sectoral effort under the umbrella of EKO CARES, which includes interventions in health, transportation, and education.

While the market faced some challenges during its debut last week, improvements have been made, resulting in a smoother experience for buyers.
Reports from various markets indicated earlier sales, orderly queues, and efficient payment processes at the cashless markets. Products such as rice, beans, pepper, bread, eggs, and garri were available for purchase, albeit with prices varying by location.
To ensure fairness and prevent resale, children were not allowed to make purchases, while priority was given to the elderly, expectant women, and persons with disabilities. Residents expressed satisfaction with the initiative, citing affordable prices and improved accessibility to essential goods.
One resident, Babalola Onitire, shared his positive experience, stating, “I have come back today and I have had what I wanted for my family at low prices,” after being unable to purchase items due to overcrowding during the previous week.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Emmanuel Fatai Audu, commended market leaders, vendors, and buyers for their peaceful conduct during engagements at various markets. The initiative is set to continue next Sunday, offering continued relief to Lagosians grappling with economic challenges.
