LAGOS. Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The civil society organizations (CSOs) and human rights lawyers have urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts and avoid engaging in perceived politically motivated pursuits.
Under the banner of the Committee for the Defence of Democracy and Rule of Law, representatives from over 100 CSOs convened in Abuja to address what they view as potentially detrimental practices within the EFCC.
The committee highlighted concerns regarding the agency’s apparent fixation on specific targets, accompanied by intense media scrutiny and the overt alignment of certain opposition figures with EFCC actions, which they perceive as indicative of political vendettas.

The Co-Convener of the Committee, Barrister Kayode Mogboj emphasized the paramount importance of maintaining the EFCC’s independence from political influence.
He cautioned against allowing the agency to be manipulated by disgruntled politicians seeking retribution against adversaries, urging EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, to resist external pressures and focus on impartial enforcement of the law.
Mogbojuri specifically cited the handling of corruption allegations against former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State as a concerning example of potential political bias within the EFCC.
He pointed out discrepancies in the charges leveled against Bello, including allegations dating back to a time before he assumed office, suggesting a rush to implicate him without proper investigation.

The committee also raised objections to the EFCC’s assertion that Bello was “at large,” noting the absence of prior official communication regarding his status.
They highlighted statements from legal counsel representing opposition interests, which they claim contribute to the politicization of the EFCC’s actions.
Of particular concern to the CSOs and lawyers is the EFCC’s apparent disregard for a court order restraining any action against Bello pending a hearing on his fundamental human rights.
They argue that the EFCC’s willingness to flout legal directives undermines the rule of law and raises suspicions of ulterior motives.

Expressing apprehension about the potential consequences of unchecked politicization within the EFCC, the committee warned of both domestic and international scrutiny should the agency continue to prioritize political agendas over legal integrity.
They urged the EFCC to adhere strictly to legal procedures and avoid actions that could compromise public confidence in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
