LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Nigeria has clinched the top spot in the 2024 World Mathematics Tournament (WMT).
The tournament saw participation from thirty-three countries and 590 schools globally.
The virtual competition by the Mathematics for Life Foundation for Senior Secondary and High School Students worldwide was the 4th edition of the tournament.
Students of Welkin International Schools, Atan-Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria emerged victorious in both categories.
Emmanuel Olusanya, a Senior Secondary, SS 3 student at Welkin International Schools, claimed victory in the senior category, while Ireoluwa Olajide, a Junior Secondary, JS 1 student, outshone other contenders in the junior category.
During the awards ceremony held at the premises of Welkin International School, Atan-Ota, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the Commissioner for Education in the state, lauded the school for bringing honor and prestige to Ogun State.
Represented by Mr. Sadiq Obafemi, the commissioner extended congratulations to the parents of the award-winning students for their foresight in investing in their children’s future. He reaffirmed Governor Dapo Abiodun’s government’s dedication to creating an enabling environment and providing resources to enhance education in the state.

Mr. Adebayo Beckley, Chairman of Welkin International Schools, expressed immense joy at the achievement, highlighting the significance of the award for both the school management and parents.
He emphasized the school’s commitment to maintaining its leadership position among its peers, praising the students for their dedication and resilience on the global stage.
Osuntuyi Omoniyi, President of the Mathematics for Life Foundation, expressed pride in presenting the 2024 WMT awards to Welkin International Schools’ students.
He underscored the Foundation’s global recognition as an NGO committed to improving education standards and eradicating illiteracy in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.
Omoniyi also shared the Foundation’s initiatives, including annual visits to Motherless Homes and free training for school dropouts to empower them for self-reliance.
Reflecting on the competition’s history, Omoniyi noted its inception in Alimosho and celebrated the remarkable journey from the first winner, Faith Odunsi, to the current edition featuring eight schools from six countries in the final round.
Mr Emmanuel Adesina Ilebiyi, representing the Olu of Atan-Ota Aworiland, conveyed the community’s pride in the school’s achievement, emphasizing its reputation for academic excellence.
Also speaking, Coordinator of the Competition Department and HOD Mathematics at Welkin, Mr. Alalade Matthew Oluwaseun, attributed the school’s success to divine providence.
He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the parents and prayed for continued blessings upon the school.
The ceremony was attended by the Proprietress of the school, Mrs. Victoria Olubunmi Beckley, alongside other esteemed members of the management team.
