Morrisville, VT (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Kellogg’s CEO, Gary Pilnick, faces criticism for suggesting budget-conscious individuals consider cereal as a dinner option to cut costs.
The controversial statement was made during an interview where Pilnick discussed the company’s strategies to connect with financially strained consumers in the US.
The multinational company, known for producing popular cereals like Corn Flakes, Special K, and Coco Pops, has been actively promoting its products with the slogan: “Give chicken the night off.”
In a CNBC interview, monitored by Voice of Naija, Pilnick explained, “Consumers are under pressure, so, we’re advertising about cereal for dinner.

“If you think about the cost of cereal for a family compared to other dinner options, that’s a more affordable choice.
“In general, the cereal category is a place that many might consider, as a bowl of cereal with milk and fruit costs less than a dollar.
“This could be an appealing option for consumers facing financial challenges.”
When questioned by host Carl Quintanilla about the potential negative reception of the message, Pilnick responded, “We don’t think so.
“Over 25% of cereal consumption occurs outside of breakfast, with a significant portion at dinner.
“Cereal for dinner aligns with current trends and is likely to continue as consumers feel economic pressure.”
This statement comes amid global inflation concerns, particularly in the food sector, despite recent easing in the inflation rate in some regions.
