ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- A significant number of women engaged in the production of local bread, known as Gurasa, took to the streets of Kano to protest the exorbitant cost of flour, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene.
Brandishing placards with messages such as “Government must address the rapid rise in flour costs” and “We need government intervention, save our lives,” the women embarked on the protest to draw attention to the escalating price of flour.
Fatima Auwal Chediyar Yangurasa, the Chairperson of the Women Gurasa Producers, expressed their distress, revealing that the price of a 50kg bag of flour had surged from less than N16,000 to an alarming N43,000 in less than a month.

“Life has gradually become difficult for us, with many of our members facing imprisonment due to debts, leaving their children in destitution and abject poverty,” Fatima lamented.
She highlighted the dire consequences in Kano, where numerous children of the protesting women have been forced out of school as their parents can no longer sustain them through their primary business of Gurasa production.
Fatima specifically called on Abdussamad Isiyaku Rabiu, the Chairman of BUA, a major flour supplier, to consider the challenges faced by the producers and take measures to reduce the prices of his flour.
“We started the protest against the hike in the price of BUA Flour mills when a bag was sold at N16,000, demanding an immediate reversal. Despite our stance, today the price has skyrocketed to a whopping N43,000 per bag,” she added.
