LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, is dead.
He reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday at the National Hospital, Abuja following a brief illness.
Here are nine things to know about the late former speaker of the fourth republic;
Mr Na’Abba was born into the family of Umar Na’Abba, a businessman in Tudun Wada, Kano City, on 27 September 1958.
He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1979.
His early education was at Jakara Primary School, Kano where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1969.

As a Political Science student at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he was elected as an executive committee member of the ABU chapter of the revolutionary People’s Redemption Party established in the Second Republic by the maverick politician, Mallam Aminu Kano.
Late Na’Abba joined the Peoples Democratic Party, and became the party’s candidate for Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, a position he won during the April 1999 general elections.
He subsequently emerged Speaker of the House of Representatives after the political crisis that led to exit of the first Speaker of the Fourth Republic, Salisu Buhari.
Na’Abba was the speaker of the House of Representatives between 1999-2003 but lost his re-election bid after falling out with former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
He was conferred the National Honors Award of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) awarded by Goodluck Jonathan, President of Nigeria in 2010. Additionally, he was honored with the status of an Honorary Citizen of Kansas City, Missouri, USA, along with various other notable recognitions.
Aside from politics, Na’Abba was a businessman who was involved in importation of goods, manufacturing, and publishing.
