LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) Legendary footballer Lionel Messi is set for a reunion with his former club, Newell’s Old Boys, as he prepares to represent Inter Miami in a friendly match.
Messi, a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, began his football journey with Newell’s in Rosario, his hometown, before his storied career in Europe with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Now, he’s a star attraction in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Inter Miami.
After helping Inter Miami secure a historic League Cup triumph in 2023, Messi and the team won’t be part of the MLS playoffs this season.

They are taking an extended break before the 2024 MLS season commences. In November, Miami planned two friendly matches against Qingdao Hainiu and Chengdu Rongcheng during their trip to China.
Additionally, reports from TyC Sports suggest that Inter Miami will also arrange a friendly against Newell’s Old Boys in February at DRV PNK Stadium.
This event marks a unique occasion as Messi will return to the club where his illustrious career began, providing fans with a trip down memory lane.
Tata Martino, Inter Miami’s manager, will also face familiar faces from his past.
