LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – In a new Netflix documentary titled “Beckham,” David Beckham shares insights into the notorious incident where Sir Alex Ferguson kicked a boot at his head.
This incident occurred in 2003, shortly before Beckham’s departure from Manchester United to Real Madrid.
At the time, tabloids had published photos of Beckham with a cut above his left eye, and it was revealed that the injury was caused by a frustrated Ferguson following United’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round.
However, Beckham acknowledges that he played a part in the confrontation.
Beckham describes the tense atmosphere in the changing room after the match, with Ferguson visibly angry.

He explains, “We walked into the changing room, and the boss is fuming. I could see it on his face.
“When you see the boss with that expression, you don’t want to be anywhere near him. It’s a look that no one can imitate, trust me.”
The situation escalated as both Beckham and Ferguson exchanged heated words. Beckham admits, “I went back at the boss and said ‘no,’ and then I used explicit language.
“I said the f-word. I noticed his demeanor change, and I thought, ‘Oops, I really shouldn’t have said that.’ I probably used the f-word one too many times.”
Regarding the photos of Beckham with a bandaged head that surfaced in the media, Ferguson dismisses them, suggesting they were “stage-managed” and not even worth a stitch.
Beckham’s departure from Manchester United to Real Madrid followed a few months later.
Despite this move, he asserts in the documentary that he never truly wanted to leave Old Trafford.
“It was my home. My relationship with the boss was always special. We had our moments, but I still loved him,” Beckham reflects.
In response, Ferguson offers his perspective, stating, “The decision was made, and it was better for him [Beckham] to leave.
“He didn’t have to go; he could have stayed if he wanted. I believe he knew it was the right time.”
Now, two decades later, Beckham finds himself working alongside another football icon.
As a co-owner of the MLS franchise Inter Miami, he is associated with Lionel Messi, one of the world’s best players.
