ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra has passionately highlighted the importance of unity among the Igbos and the rest of Nigeria.
Amid the persistent calls for secession, Governor Soludo emphasized that Igbos, known for their savvy trading, require Nigeria just as much as the nation needs them.
He said this in a keynote address at the 2023 South-East Summit on Economy and Security held in Owerri, Imo State.
“As a people with a rich history of itinerant trade, we cannot afford to be intolerant,” stated Mr Soludo, underlining the need for cooperation and harmony.
Governor Soludo further stated, “It’s not just about us needing Nigeria; Nigeria needs us too. Ndigbo needs Africa and the world, and conversely, the world and Africa need Ndigbo. We require partnerships with everyone, including the rest of the country, the diaspora, and the international community.”

The Governor’s stance comes amidst renewed calls for the Biafra Republic, led by Nnamdi Kanu’s Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
These calls escalated from protests to armed conflict following a tragic incident in 2016 when Nigerian soldiers opened fire on IPOB protesters, resulting in over 150 casualties.
Additionally, the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, despite court orders for his release, has further fueled tensions in the South East, leading to unrest and sit-at-home orders.
Governor Soludo, however, expressed optimism about the region’s potential for economic growth despite security challenges. He encouraged a positive outlook, stating, “While it’s essential to acknowledge the challenges, we must also recognize the South-East’s readiness for business.
“This region is ripe for economic development, and we should believe in our ability to turn things around and revitalize the South-East. Let this summit inspire us to focus on progress, as other places thrive despite their own security issues.“
