ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- As part of effort to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the 2022 flood disaster in Anambra State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has initiated the distribution of essential relief materials to impacted households.
The Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Ahmed, disclosed that thorough damage and loss assessments had been conducted across the ten local government areas struck by the disaster. As a result, relief items were authorized for 18,904 households.
Speaking during the distribution of the “Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention for 2022 Flood Victims and Vulnerable Persons” in Awka on Tuesday, Ahmed highlighted the agency’s commitment to mitigating the consequences of the flood devastation, coupled with the economic challenges posed by the removal of oil subsidies.
Representing the NEMA DG, Mr. Olusegun Afolayan explained, “The 2022 flood disaster devastated many communities across the country, including Anambra State.
After the flood incident, a damage and loss assessment was conducted, and relief items were approved for 18,904 households in Anambra.
The assessment was done in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency, hence, the distribution of the relief items to support the victims’ quick return to normalcy.”

Governor Chukwuma Soludo expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for its intervention, acknowledging that the flood disaster had overwhelmed the state government’s capacity.
The Governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, highlighted the adverse effects of the flood incident on health, education, the economy, and the livelihoods of residents.
He affirmed the state administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at alleviating the socio-economic hardships faced by the people.
The distributed relief items encompassed a wide range of essentials, including foodstuffs, sewing machines, grinding machines, cooking stoves, pots, mattresses, mosquito nets, mats, buckets, and blankets.
