LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – WhatsApp is expanding its Channels feature, marking a significant advancement in its broadcasting capabilities.
While WhatsApp has been consistently adding features, competitors like Telegram and Discord had certain advantages.
Meta introduced the Channels feature for WhatsApp, initially piloting it in Colombia and Singapore. However, this feature has now become accessible in 150 countries.
Channels on WhatsApp offer a one-to-many messaging format, making it suitable for brands, celebrities, and various entities to communicate with a broader audience.
Although not everyone can create a Channel at this stage, users from 150 countries will soon be able to follow and interact with them.

WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announced that Channels “will likely be available to almost EVERYONE by the end of tomorrow,” addressing concerns about the feature’s universal availability.
This development ensures that the majority of WhatsApp users can engage with Channels by September 19.
The design and functionality of Channels reflect WhatsApp’s efforts to enhance interactivity.
Users can now react to updates in Channels with emojis, similar to regular chats on the platform.
Additionally, messages from Channels can be forwarded to individual and group chats, making the feature more discoverable and likely to be widely adopted.
WhatsApp has created a separate section for Channels, making it easy for users to distinguish between regular chats and Channels.
By default, Channels are filtered by country, prioritizing local content. However, users can customize their preferences, including filtering by newness or followers.
WhatsApp has even more in store for Channels. Future updates will include the ability for users to create their own Channels.
While some users already have this capability, it will be rolled out more widely in the coming months.
WhatsApp’s Channels feature is poised to reshape how users interact with the platform.
With global availability expanding and more features on the horizon, WhatsApp is solidifying its position as a leading messaging app.
