ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Tensions are on the rise in the Osun State as a deadly incident occurred amidst an ongoing land dispute between the Ilobu and Ifon-Orolu communities.

On Friday, 15 September, 2023, unknown gunmen tragically took the life of 28-year-old farmer Sodiq Alamu on disputed land in the Opapa area.

The conflict had been simmering for weeks, with the Ilobu community sounding an alarm about potential violence from Ifon-Orolu, according to the Nations.

Tairu Babatunde, the Public Relations Officer of the Ilobu-Asake Development Union, revealed that Sodiq, a resident of Aganna’s compound in Ilobu, fell victim to this dispute.

“Eesa of Ifon-Osun, Babatunde Oyetunji, and a Prince of Ifon-Osun, Jide Akinyooye, have finally carried out their threats by killing an indigene of Ilobu identified as Sodiq of Aganna’s,” said Babatunde.

In response to the escalating situation, the Osun State Police Command has called for calm among the residents of Ilobu and Ifon. SP Opalola Yemisi Olawoyin, the command’s spokesperson, assured the public that an investigation into Alamu’s tragic death is underway.

“The Osun State Police Command is aware of the report of the incident of the death of one Sodiq Alamu, about 28 years of age, along Opapa village in Ilobu.

“We urge the residents of both communities and its environs to remain calm as an investigation has immediately commenced to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the young man”, the statement read.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Kehinde Longer, is actively engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to promote peace and ensure that justice is served in this challenging situation.
