LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- A lecturer of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akeem Babalola, is currently facing allegations of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old undergraduate student.

The undergraduate disclosed that the incident occurred when she visited the lecturer in the office to sort out issues about her results.

Instead of addressing the student’s academic concerns, Dr. Babalola is alleged to have committed the act, reportedly raping her on 16 August, 2023.

The victim, distraught by her encounter, reached out to the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, a non-governmental organization.

It was gathered that InclusiveSWEF reported the case to the Gender Unit of the State Police Command and through the OC Gender, the State CP, Idowu Owohunwa, issued a warrant of arrest for Babalola through the State High Court and involved the Vice Chancellor, UNILAG.

According to InclusiveSWEF, UNILAG and the Police have been working tirelessly to ensure justice for the undergraduate.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, saying, ā€œHe is to appear in court in the coming days.ā€

Reacting, the spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said that the university is aware of an investigation involving one of its employee.

ā€œUNILAG Management, on 28 August, received a letter from the Nigeria Police Force, inviting an employee of the university for questioning. The employee was immediately informed of the development and advised to comply,ā€ she disclosed.
