LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Meta Platforms is gearing up to introduce the web version of Threads, its recently launched text-centric social media platform.
This move is aimed at gaining a competitive advantage over X, previously known as Twitter, especially as the initial surge in Threads’ user base began to dwindle.
Anticipation surrounds the impending launch of the web version, which is expected to enhance the utility of Threads for power users such as brands, corporate profiles, advertisers, and journalists.
While Meta has not specified an exact launch date, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, hinted at an imminent release.
In a Threads post last Friday, Mosseri expressed his closeness to the web launch, suggesting it could occur as early as this week. The Wall Street Journal also reported on the potential for a swift launch.
Threads initially gained immense popularity, amassing 100 million users within just five days of its Android and iOS app launch on 5 July.

However, as the initial rush subsided, user engagement declined, with many returning to the more familiar X platform.
Within a span of slightly over a month, the daily active user count for the Android app plummeted from a peak of 49.3 million to 10.3 million, based on data from the analytics platform Similarweb as of August 10.
To counteract this trend, the management is swiftly implementing new features. Threads now enables users to set notifications for specific accounts and view them in a chronological feed format.
Additionally, an upgraded search function is in the pipeline, allowing users to search for individual posts rather than just profiles.
Recent updates introduced by Meta for Threads encompass a variety of enhancements. These include the ability to directly share posts on Instagram DMs, the option to provide custom alt-text for photos and videos, and the introduction of a mention button for tagging other users’ accounts.
